The prestigious Forbes magazine has published its list of the world’s highest-earning athletes in 2026. As expected, the number one spot goes to none other than superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. This is the fourth consecutive year the Portuguese striker has topped Forbes’ list with a record income of $300 million.
Ronaldo’s enormous fortune largely comes from his blockbuster contract with Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, which brings him an on-field salary/bonus of approximately $200 million per year. The remaining $100 million comes from Ronaldo’s off-field income, including lifetime sponsorship deals with Nike, revenue from his personal brand CR7 (hotels, perfumes, underwear), and lucrative advertising campaigns for major corporations in the Middle East.
Lionel Messi Is In A Lucky Position in the Rankings
Lionel Messi ranks fourth on the list with total earnings of $140 million. After moving to the US to play for Inter Miami, El Pulga has maintained a massive income from a variety of sources. Specifically, Leo’s salary and bonuses in MLS amount to approximately $65 million per year.
Messi has been extremely successful commercially, raking in $75 million from key sources including: a lifetime sponsorship deal with Adidas, exclusive revenue-sharing partnerships with Apple TV (MLS broadcasting rights) and Fanatics, and numerous advertising deals with Pepsi, Louis Vuitton, and international investment funds.
Interspersed among the football star, at number 2 on the list is boxer Canelo Alvarez. Despite an unsuccessful year with one win and one loss (a defeat against Terence Crawford), the 35-year-old still pocketed $170 million. Of that amount, $160 million came from earnings from major fights and $10 million from sponsorship deals. Canelo is currently recovering from elbow surgery and is expected to have a rematch in Saudi Arabia this September.

The remaining two spots in the top 5 are occupied by basketball legend LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers ($137.8 million) and baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers ($127.6 million). In 2026, boxing will only have one more name in Forbes’ top 100 highest-earning athletes: former boxer and YouTuber Jake Paul (ranked 23rd, $70 million). Paul caused a sensation after his fight with Anthony Joshua, where he was knocked out and suffered a broken jaw.
